Barack is Still My Man

When Hillary Clinton was running against Barack Obama in the primary for the presidential election in 2008, she was my champion. Hillary was the utmost as our first lady. Her work and presentation on universal health care was brilliant. Her motives were genuine. Hillary Clinton worked night and day to make something happen that would be good for all Americans. I hung on every word that was televised and flinched when senators, congressmen and representatives did not embrace her proposal with the gratitude and respect it deserved.
I voted for Hillary in the primaries and did not even pay attention to the man who would run against her. I didn’t know anything about that man; he was a stranger without a chance. As Barack Obama became renowned, I watched him with interest, but did not consider him a serious candidate. My loyalty to Hillary was still absolute. As the primary election loomed closer, it was clear that Obama was a viable candidate. I watched their final debate before the primary election and flinched at the tone of Hillary’s voice as she disagreed with Barack when the topic was foreign affairs. I thought she came across a bit coarse. I also thought Obama said “Uh” too much. As I was adjusting to Barack Obama as a serious contender, and paying more attention to his content, I found I agreed with his position on many things. I did not consider him a winning candidate because of the critical nature of our foreign affairs and his lack of experience in foreign affairs.
Hillary got my vote; she was going to win, for sure. I was energized because of my confidence that soon, Hillary would lead our nation in a better direction and I was looking forward to the Clintons moving into the White House again.
Regrettably, my candidate did not win. In fact, I knew she would not win as soon as Ted Kennedy and Oprah Winfrey endorsed Barack Obama. I tried to understand Ted’s and Oprah’s motivations. They were both people that had my attention and respect.
Barack Obama became my candidate. I had a lingering concern about his foreign policy and affairs experience, but at the same time, I was reassured by his history. He is man who was raised by a single mother and grandparents. The fact that he is bi-racial, gives him insight to many of the citizens of the nation he serves. I am still certain Barack Obama was the best candidate. As the presidential election became closer, the biggest concern was that McCain would win by a small margin and Sarah Palin would be a “heartbeat” away from the presidency. I could not get my head around the possibility that our nation would select such a shallow person. I also lost additional respect for John McCain in his running mate selection.
Fortunately, Barack Obama won. He took office as a financial catastrophe was emerging; we were immersed in two wars; fearful of terrorism and racial inequalities still keep us from a unified goal.
Barack Obama eased concern about his foreign affairs experience by appointing Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State and she has been brilliant. Our economy will not recover on cuts alone. There are minimums required to survive. The time is coming when there is no more money in the budget to cut, and we just have to get out there and earn some money.
Barack Obama understands this, and Barack Obama has my complete loyalty and support.

I enjoy your postings about your foster children so much. I read all of them. But I also enjoyed this one.
I was an Obama supporter from early on. I heard the speech he gave at the Democratic convention in 2004 and always hoped he would run. In 2006 my husband and I were teaching for a short time in an English language school in Poland. The students would sometimes ask us questions about American politics. When they asked who we thought would be a candidate in the 2008 election I told them to write down the name Barack Obama. None of them had heard of him at that time,and my husband didn't think he would run much less be elected.
I was very pleased with his choice of Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State. She has been a class act.

I totally agree with you Anne. I initially supported Hillary also. She also has done a marvelous job. He has done everything he said he would including going into Pakistan and killing Bin-Laden. He has helped steady the economy. It is slowly recovering but that is because the previous administration put us in such a deep hole. Great Hub.

Hi, Anne, Hilary was my choice, too, in the beginning. It was just that Obama ran a flawless campaign and Hilary underestimated his abilities. He took nothing for granted and simply ran a better campaign. In every encounter, Obama proved himself above board and presidential during the campaign period. When he won in Iowa and South Carolina and was going to be more than a Jesse Jackson protest candidate, I started to take notice. I still trust his instincts as to where he wishes to take us, even though the view is muddled as always with current realities of governing.

I hadnt thought of Hillary taking Obama for granted. You are right. Now that I think about her attitude, that is exactly what happened.
I, too, was a strong Hillary supporter (middle-aged liberal white woman thing), but Barack Obama quickly won me over. We needed a younger, more comtemporary mind in the White House. After all, it's all about the future.
Hillary has found her calling as Secretary of State. I think she was destined for this job -- she's a golden girl -- right where she belongs!

As you are aware, I am no fan of either Obama or Clinton. However, I voted this hub up because it is very well written, you did an excellent job of arguing your case, and I admire you for your loyalty. Being loyal is one of the best traits that one can have, in my oinion.
You and I are not on the same page politically, but that does not matter to me. I enjoy reading your posts and you strike me as a very kind and nice person, and as some one who only wants the best for our country.

I shall only hope to change your mind. Barack Obama surrounded himself with Marxists who were anti-American. He has shown himself to be completely incapable of leading the nation. He is childish, petulant and arrogant. I believe history will identify him as the worst president we have ever had.
Still, feenix and I agree that you write well. So let us hope that eventually you will change your mind and use your talents in the defense of America instead of in defense of an emerging tyrant.
I certainly hope I can do better in my argument than just attacking the person.

I like to keep our conversations above board, but I have had it up to here with the Marxist nonsense, as I don't have a lot of use for rightwingers. The President has been far too conciliatory with the opposition in my humble opinion. If you cannot offer anything constructive, perhaps you ought to return to your side of the ravine.

On MSNBC's "Hardball" the other night, Bill Mahre made the very astute statement that Michele Bachmann is the best candidate for anyone who thinks Sarah Palin is too much of an intellectual. Actually, I hope she DOES run for president in 2012.....then Obama would doubtless win by a record landslide!

I voted this up and awesome. What a great article and not just because I totally agree with you concerning Hilary and Barack. Hilary is a class act who has worked tirelessly for this country since she was first lady and Barack who is a diplomat of the first order who we should all be proud to call our president. He walked into a catastrophe and is finally pulling us from the rubble. Your article was informative, true to your beliefs and so well written. I can't wait to read more of your work. And I too would like to know where all this "documentation" of Barack being so closely linked to Marxism is??
Some (usually not the extremely wealthy) believe that a living wage is "distributing wealth," and therefore Marxism which it is not. Thank-you for your comment and your time.

The economy is still bad, people are still losing their homes, and the housing market is really bad, jobs that actually can support a living for people are few and far between.
Gas is going for well over four dollars a gallon in CA.

Four more years like the last three plus years would put the final nails on the coffin for the US.
The economy is still bad, because conservatives want to make the president one termed. The people still losing homes fuse was lit by deregulations promoted by conservatives, job lose has slowed but not stop, job growth is slow. Inspite of three plus years of unprecedented conservative-teaparty-republican partisan politics the President has made progress. High Gas prices at this point is conservatives strongest candidate in the race to unset the President in November. That fact is no secret and all the people see whats really going on in the country they live in. Well, maybe not all.

Do you really believe that the republican candidates can solve these problems? What have they really said or done that makes you believe that we should stop the progress we have made and completely change directions? Also, I see job growth, access to health care, better equal rights for groups that are oppressed and national security. These developments will reduce our debt and increase our GDP.
The president has my full support. He is leading us out of this mess, and he does care for all Americans. I am constantly shocked by the Christian right, which has many similarities to the Taliban.
I did see it Jo, and I love it. I am so happy when Obama gets such great support.
